England analysing videos to get nemesis Hayden out
Tuesday, November 19 2002 15:41 Hrs (IST)

Adelaide: England is poring over videos to devise a way of getting prolific-scoring Australian opener Matthew Hayden out cheaply in the second Test starting on Thursday.

Hayden is one of the major obstacles confronting England to get back on terms with the Australians after their ignominious 384-run drubbing at the Gabba.

Hayden amassed 300 runs in the first Test compared to England's combined total of 404 runs in its two innings.

Since his golden streak began in India 21 months ago, Hayden has scored more runs, more centuries and achieved a better batting average in that period than anyone in Test cricket.

"When someone gets 300 runs in a Test match you're stupid if you don't go away and re-think," England captain Nasser Hussain said on Tuesday. "We have to go away and look at some videos and really work out how we're going to do it.

"Getting him out early would be a big bonus for us. Apart from Hayden and Ricky Ponting in that first Test, all our plans for the Australian batsmen pretty much worked out and we have to stick to those plans," Hussain said.

"It's about time we put it to Australia and that won't come from being down. It will come from hard work, a bit of guts and digging deep."

Australia and England are yet to settle on their teams, with Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie still to convince team physiotherapist Errol Alcott his troublesome calf muscle is ready for another Test.

England must decide whether to play batsman Robert Key or incumbent all-rounder Craig White after confirmation on Tuesday that first-choice all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is unlikely to play because of continued groin problems.

"Our general opinion is that Andrew is not fit enough to play in the Test match," Hussain said. "Key has a good chance of playing but, if you go through the Test batting averages for the last year, I think all of the top order is averaging over 50.

"The old days of chopping and changing certainly aren't where we're at and we're going to give people a good chance to show what they can do and that includes Robert Key."

England must decide whether it needs White's bowling to help it bowl out Australia twice.
