Cape Town: South Africa's Herschelle Gibbs said he was disappointed when he was out for a career-best 228 after he and Graeme Smith thrashed a lacklustre Pakistan bowling attack on the first day of the second and final Test at Newlands on Thursday. Gibbs admitted he had his sights on becoming South Africa's first Test triple centurion. "I'm obviously disappointed," he said about his dismissal. He would not comment on what seemed a dubious umpiring decision but observed that: "The video doesn't lie." Umpire Srinivas Venkataraghavan ruled Gibbs was caught at slip off Saqlain Mushtaq but replays indicated the ball spun past his bat and looped to Younis Khan off his pad only. The South African opener, who hammered his runs off 240 balls with 29 fours and six sixes, revealed he was looking past the South African Test record of 275, shared by Daryll Cullinan and Gary Kirsten. "It (300) wasn't meant to be for Daryll or Gary but I thought I had a good chance. If I had batted throughout the day I would have finished with about 250, which would have left me with about 50 to get tomorrow." The left-handed Smith, who was left out of South Africa's World Cup squad last Sunday, said he was delighted to put the disappointment behind him. "There has been a lot of emotion in the last week," he admitted. "When I got to 100 a lot of tension came out. I can't tell you how happy I was." Copyright AFP 2001
