Durban: Mark Boucher has been axed as the South African vice-captain after the country's Board decided against reappointing anyone to the post for the tour of Bangladesh. Taking a decision in this regard on Monday, the national selection committee of the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) "elected rather to work through a process to identify the right candidate during the tour," a UCBSA media release said. The selectors have chosen to name the vice-captain on a match-by-match basis for the triangular One-day International series against Bangladesh and India and the two Test series against the hosts. "I expect that all players will support the new captain, Graeme Smith, and that as the selectors try out new combinations on this tour, a player will emerge who can take responsibility for the vice-captaincy," said UCBSA CEO Gerald Majola. "This is a young squad and the selectors feel it is an opportune time to allow different players the chance to lead the middle management of the squad in support of Graeme," he said. Last month, the UCBSA had sacked Shaun Pollock from the captain's post following South Africa's first round exit from the World Cup. Pollock was later replaced by 22- year old left-handed opening batsmen Smith.
