I was expecting a national call: Avishkar Salvi
Wednesday, April 2 2003 18:02 Hrs (IST)

Bangalore: An overjoyed speedster Avishkar Salvi said he was expecting the national call after a good series with India 'A' in the recent West Indies tour and believed the absence of key pacemen would give him a great chance to prove himself.

The 21-year-old fast bowler from Thane told here after being selected in the 15- member squad for the triangular series in Dhaka, that he was confident to be in the team after the good series against the Windies. "I am very happy. I was overjoyed on hearing that I have been selected. To be in the Indian team is always an honour for anyone. For me, it's a great achievement", he said.

To a question, Salvi, earning the national cap for the first time, said the absence of Javagal Srinath and Ashish Nehra in the squad would give him a great chance to prove himself.

A modest man that he is, Salvi said with their absence, fast bowling responsibility would be on Zaheer Khan and Ajit Agarkar, and "if I can help them, it's better".

He believed the selectors, have rewarded his hard work adding, he hoped to do well in the championship, also involving South Africa, beginning on April 11.

Salvi, part the Elite 'B' team, had net practice at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium here ahead of the team's Duleep Trophy encounter against Elite 'A' starting on Thursday.
