Salvi, Gambhir to make their debut tomorrow

Dhaka: Uncapped youngsters Gautam Gambhir and Avishkar Salvi will make their international debut in India's opening match of the TVS Cup tri-series against Bangladesh on Friday after earning kudos from captain Saurav Ganguly who believes they have the potential to succeed at the highest level.

"Gambhir and Salvi will be making their debut tomorrow (Friday)," Ganguly told reporters on Thursday after a strenuous practice session here at the Bangabandhu Stadium. "These guys have a lot of talent and I am sure they will do well at the international level," Ganguly said.

Ganguly also put to rest speculation over who would open the innings in the absence of the injured Sachin Tendulkar saying the job would be entrusted to Gambhir, the regular opener for Delhi in the domestic circuit. "Gambhir will open the innings since he will be more comfortable in that position," the Indian skipper said.

Gambhir's opening partner will be stand-in vice-captain Virender Sehwag which means Ganguly will continue to bat in the number three position.

With five members of the Indian World Cup squad making themselves unavailable due to various reasons, the selectors included four new faces in the 15-memberi team for the Dhaka event which has South Africa as the third team.

The Indian team management has not yet announced the playing eleven for the opening floodlit encounter on Friday but it appears that left-hander Dinesh Mongia, who did not have a particularly impressive World Cup, will continue to hold his position in the team.

The think tank was toying with the idea of going in with two specialist spinners considering the placid track at the Bangabandhu Stadium but may also prefer all- rounder Ajit Agarkar, who did not play even a single match in the World Cup as the other two Sanjay Bangar and Parthiv Patel, to strengthen the batting department.

But in the absence of injured Rahul Dravid in this series, Patel will get a chance to show his skills behind the stumps.
