Waqar reaches milestone of 400 wickets in ODIs

Bangalore: In the world of cricket who has not heard of the famous trio? - Worrell, Weekes and Walcott, better known as the three Ws of West Indies. However there is another set of two Ws who are also popular the world over.

While the three Ws had become a threat to the bowlers of their opponent countries during their stay at the wicket in test cricket, the two Ws of Pakistan - Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis have proved to be a thorn to the batsmen all over the world by their sheer pace, swing, line and length not only in Tests but also in Limited Overs cricket.

Though both of them have passed the cricket prime age of 30 years, the cobra sting is still very much existent in their bowling in both versions of the game till date.

While the older and much more experienced Wasim Akram has the distinction of being the only one to take 400 or more wickets in both Tests and Limited Over Internationals, Waqar Younis has proved that his credentials are still in tact by taking his 400th wicket in the first of the scheduled Five Limited Over Internationals against South Africa.

He accomplished this feat at Durban on 08.12.2002 in his 252nd match. It may be interesting to note here that both these bowlers did not take a wicket in their debut match.

While Wasim Akram conceded 31 runs in his 4 overs against New Zealand at Faisalabad on 23.11.1984, he did not bowl in his 2nd match, against New Zealand at Auckland in the Rothman's Cup on 17.02.1985; in his 3rd match of his career, against India he conceded 38 runs in 8.5 overs without taking a wicket at Melbourne on 20.02.1985.

He finally had his first victim in his 4th match, during his spell of 5/21 in 8 overs against Australia at MCG on 24.02.1985 in the Benson & Hedges World Series Championship.

On the other hand Waqar Younis too was not successful in taking a wicket in his debut match at Sharjah on 14.10.1989 against West Indies and conceded 14 runs in 4 overs. However, he tasted success in his 2nd match, against the same opponent at the same venue on 17.10.1989 when he took 3/28 in his 9 overs.

Waqar has achieved the bowling milestones quicker than Wasim Akram. His best bowling of 7/36 has been recorded against England at Leeds on 17.06.2001. His best performance at home is 5/11 against New Zealand at Peshawar on 04.11.1990.

Presented hereunder are some of the statistics relating to the bowling careers of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis in the Limited Over Internationals updated to the first match against South Africa on 08.12.2002 at Durban.

However Waqar Younis had to be contented with his personal milestone only as his team suffered defeat in this match.
