A lot of former cricketers have flopped as coaches.

Being a former cricketer does not necessarily mean that one would be a good coach. Coaching is an entirely different ball game. Look at John Buchanan of Australia. He doesn't have a great record as a cricketer, but in his tenure, Aussies have recorded their best run in Tests as well as One-dayers.

Who do you think is an ideal coach?

Bobby Simpson. In my opinion, he is the best. At present, he is coaching Lancashire.

After having worked with Arjuna Ranatunga, how do you find Sanath Jayasuriya?

Arjuna was a very experienced cricketer, Sanath is just learning the ropes. Their approach to the job too is different, but both like to win.

Whom do you rate as the best fielder in the Sri Lankan side?

Upul Chandana. He has a safe pair of hands and can field anywhere. Moreover, he hits the stumps very often from close.

Is the Sri Lankan pace bowling an area of concern?

I agree, we are pretty thin in that area, but there is Chaminda Vaas. He has come on a lot. Nuwan Zoysa and Kaushalya Weeraratne have a great future.

We are, however, missing the experienced Pramodaya Wickremasinghe. He is recuperating from an injury. I am sure we will unearth talent along the way.

Finally, are you happy that the match-fixing allegations have not affected Sri Lankan cricketers?

I am relieved. Controversies never help and this is of the worst kind. Thank god, we are not affected.
