Brisbane: Venkat Laxman, called into the side when Sourav Ganguly hurt his ankle, scored a century as India began their tour of Australia with a four-day match against Queensland today.

He and his skipper Sachin Tendulkar put on 136 for the fourth wicket but pace bowler Scott Muller sparked a late collapse which saw six wickets go down for 29 runs. India ended the opening day on 273 for nine. Muller, dropped from the Australian test team earlier in the week, finished with three for 27 off 20 overs.

He sparked the India collapse by dismissing both Laxman and Tendulkar, claiming his three wickets for just two runs in 21 balls. Laxman, who made 113, and Tendulkar carried India from 100 for three to 236 before they were parted.
