Although hit wicket is a mode of dismissal that is accounted for as bowled with the credit being given to the bowler, it is a term used when a batsman ends up disturbing his stumps irrespective of the fact that the ball has not hit the stumps.
There are occasions when the batsman gets his stumps disturbed as a result of his bat hitting the stumps or as a result of some part of his body colliding with the stumps. In such circumstances where the ball has not gone on to disturb the stumps, nevertheless the stumps end up being disturbed then the batsman shall be given out hit wicket.
However the credit of dismissing the batsman will go to the bowler concerned. Such dismissals though not a regular occurrence do appear from time to time.
