Pinch hitter is a term used when a lower order batsman; somebody who can hit big shots, is sent up the order with an intention to get some quick runs. The practice of pinch hitting is normally used in the shorter version of the game unless the situation warrants it in the longer version of the game.

Whenever the team finds itself in a tight spot – when runs are hard tocome by and it has lost a wicket or two – it decides to send in a pinchhitter in order to get some quick runs thereby relieving some pressureoff the team. If successfully done, it will then mean that the regularbatsmen can play their normal game and not worry so much about the runrate.

The term pinch hitter is originally from the game of baseball.
