In the game of cricket there are basically two types of bowling. One is fast bowling, which deals with delivering the ball at a fast pace by placing the fingers along the seam of the ball, normally referred as seam up bowling, the other is the spin bowling, which deals with imparting spin on the ball by the rolling of the fingers or wrist across the seam of the ball. A spin bowler (spinner) is one who falls under the latter category, which also is termed as the slow bowling department.

An orthodox spinner gives the ball a lot of air thereby allowing the delivery to form a loop. On pitching the spinner makes the ball turn sharply either towards or away from the batsman. Since the spinner belongs to the slower category he/she normally has a very short run up in comparison with a fast bowler.

There are various types of spinners in the game of cricket namely off-spinner, leg-spinner and left-arm spinner.

Some of the great spinners in the game of cricket are Lance Gibbs (off-spinner) E A S Prasanna (off-spinner), Bishan Bedi (left-arm spinner), Ray Illingworth (off-spinner), B S Chanderashekar (leg-spinner), Shane Warne (leg-spinner) and Muttiah Muralitharan (off-spinner).
