Being the coach of Indian cricket team has not been an easy task for Kapil Dev. He is in the hot seat and India's performance Down Under being not too impressive, Kapil has a tough task ahead of him. In a telephonic conversation with Sports Time on Doordarshan produced by Trans World International (TWI), Kapil Dev spoke about the present team and its future plans. Here are some of the excerpts from the conversation.

Is it viable to ask Sachin to open the innings?

He may open the innings and it all depends on how he feels. Really speaking, we have no other choices and if he feels ok, he will definitely open the innings.

If Sachin opens the innings, who will be his partner?

There are still a lot of things happening here. Jacob Martin is not fit as he has strained his shoulder. So we are trying to work out the best combination for the team at this stage. Rahul is there and if he plays well, we will feel more comfortable.

What do you think of the playing schedule? Is it very taxing?

Basically the team gets back at around midnight after press conferences and other schedules. When they actually go to sleep, it will be around 2 am. And then the next morning we wake up at 8 am and travel again. After reaching the other venue, when I tell the boys to go to practice, it gets a bit too taxing for them.

How is the morale of the team before the fourth one-day match after losing the first two rather narrowly?

The morale of the team is a bit low and it is a very difficult situation. When the boys lose matches, boosting their morale is not an easy task. We discuss and I convince them by saying that we are playing well and losing by narrow margins. So if we put in that extra effort, we will win those matches which we lost narrowly. It becomes very tough for me to lift everyone every time. I think once we start winning, they'll be on high spirits once again.

Will spinners be part of the team at Sydney Cricket Ground?

In all probability, Nikhil or Joshi will play tomorrow. It all really depends on the type of wicket. There was very little grass on the wicket, but they were rolling it and trying to even things out. So it depends on what we finally see and decide on the extra spinner accordingly.
