Powar and Pawar power Mumbai into quarters

Kolkata: Mumbai on Thursday stormed into the quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy, crushing Bengal by 242 runs on the concluding day of their four-day Super League encounter at the Eden Gardens.

With this outright victory, Mumbai collected 32 points from four Super League group matches.

Chasing a deficit of 380 runs in their second knock, the hosts were bundled out for 138 in 107 minutes after resuming their innings at 67 for the loss of four wickets.

Both the Mumbai spinners Ramesh Powar and Rajesh Pawar, who had an overnight tally of 3/15 and 1/28, shared the Bengal wickets equally, conceding 46 and 60 runs respectively.

Saba Karim, who has been recalled to the national squad to play for the remaining one-ayers against South Africa,was trapped leg before wicket by off-spinner Romesh Powar, adding 19 runs to his overnight score of seven.

His overnight partner Rohan Gavaskar also fell to Powar, scoring only 13 runs.

Rajesh Pawar, during a devastating 9.1 over spell, scalped the wickets of Nikhil Haldipur, Vishal Yadav, Utpal Chatterjee and Sourasish Lahiri.
