Bangalore: Hyderabad are virtually through to the title clash as Ranji champions Karnataka were battling out at 523 for nine when rain stopped play in the semi-finals on the penultimate day at the M Chinnaswamy stadium here on Friday.

Dodda Ganesh on 51 and Mansoor Ali Khan on zero were at the crease and Karnataka will have a herculean task of scoring 189 runs to overhaul Hyderabad's first innings total of 711 for eight declared.

Even if the match is washed out on Saturday, Hyderabad will cruise Into the finals on better run average and having lost fewer wickets. Nearly 34 minutes of play was washed out as rains started at around 16:00 hrs with still 11.5 overs remaining to be bowled. The umpires called off the play around 16:45 hrs.

For Karnataka, Vijay R Bharadwaj (90), Rowland Barrington (65), Sunil Joshi (72) and B Akhil (32) batted well and helped the team avoid the ignominy of following on. For Hyderabad, medium- pacer Fiyaz Ahmed (3-114) and spinners Venkatapathy Raju (3-127) and Kanwaljeet Singh (3-127) shared the nine wickets.

Resuming at a healthy score of 269 for two, Karnataka lost three quick wickets after Azhaurddin had taken the second new ball earlier in the day. Medium-pacer Fiaz Ahmed struck the first blow when he had Barrington Rowland brilliantly caught in the slips by Mohd Azharuddin.

Barrington was playing well. The young batsman tried to cut a delivery from Fiaz Ahmed and found Azharuddin diving and coming up with a superb catch. Barrington made 65 with the help of eight boundaries. He and Vijay R Bharadwaj added 112 runs for the third wicket.

V S Thilak Naidu did not last long as he became the second victim of Fiaz Ahmed. Thilak Naidu played a lazy shot for an outside the leg stump delivery and managed to edge it into the hands of wicket-keeper Riaz Sheik for just three runs.

Karnataka was hoping for a good innings from A Vijay, who had an indifferent season this year. He struck one good boundary, but edged a delivery from Raju into the hands of Riaz Sheik.

However, on resumption, Vijay R Bhardwaj failed to keep a drive on the ground and Raju gratefully accepted the return chance. Vijay Bharadwaj had 10 boundaries in his 247-minute essay.

With Karnataka still needing 142 runs to avoid the follow-on, the injured Sunil Joshi entered the field with a runner. The all-rounder batted superbly and was very severe on Raju.
