Laxman

Bangalore: The 26-six-year-old Vangaipurappu Venkata Sai Laxman became the first Indian to score a triple century twice in the 66-year-old history of the Ranji Trophy. He made an unbeaten 346 in the semi-finals against Karnataka at the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore yesterday.

Laxman, who had scored his first triple century against Bihar in Jamshedpur (301) in 1997-98, became the fifth highest Ranji Trophy scorer. His 723-minute marathon knock was studded with 50 boundaries and two massive sixes.

Fifteen others, including Laxman, had earlier scored 300 plus runs. They are B B Nimbalkar of Maharashtra (443 no), S V Manjrekar of Bombay (377), M V Sridhar of Hyderabad (366), V M Merchant of Bombay (359 no), S M Gavaskar of Bombay (340), Ajit Wadekar of Bombay (323), Devang J Gandhi of West Bengal (323), Gul Mohammed of Baroda (319), V S Hazare of Maharashtra (316), Wasim Jaffer of Mumbai (314 no), W V Raman of Tamil Nadu (313), Raman Lamba of Delhi (312), A Azeem of Hyderabad (303), Arjun Kripal Singh (302) and V V S Laxman (301 no).

Laxman has had a superb season, in which he scored seven centuries. This is once again a record score made in a year. He is in striking distance of smashing Vijay R Bharadwaj's record of 1280 runs set in a year. The stylish right-hand batsman will get another chance in the finals as Hyderabad are all set to storm into the title clash.

Laxman, who hit a scintillating 167 against Australia a few months ago, has two double hundreds and 17 hundreds against his name.

The Hyderabad batsman, who made his debut in the 1992 season, had 886 runs in 10 innings with a superb average of 98.44 this season before the match.

The following batsmen have scored over 300 runs in an innings in the Ranji Trophy.
