Bangalore: Openers J Arun Kumar (71) and Mithun Beerala (74) gave a rollicking start as Karnataka hit back strongly, scoring 269 for two in reply to Hyderabad's massive 711 for eight declared in the first innings on the third day of the five-day Ranji Trophy semi-final cricket match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Thursday.

At stumps, Barrington Rowland on 52 and Vijay R Bharadwaj on 38 were batting. Karnataka still need 243 to avoid the follow-on and have eight wickets in hand.

Both the openers who put on 163 for the first wicket fell to spinner Kanwaljeet Singh who was the only successful Hyderabad bowler, claiming both the wickets for 59 runs.

Earlier, Hyderabad batted for 57 minutes in the morning and skipper Mohammed Azharuddin applied closure at the fall of Fiaz Ahmed's wicket at 711. V V S Laxman, who was on 346, needing 21 runs to be the highest scorer for Hyderabad, was the first to go.

Venkatesh Prasad had claimed the third new ball straight away and he struck in his fourth over. Laxman tried to drive Prasad and was taken by substitute K N Ramesh at mid-on for 353, which included 51 boundaries and two sixes.

Karnataka started the reply in a whirlwind fashion, with the openers flaying the pace attack of Hyderabad. Both the openers matched each other stroke-for-stroke and the score moved very quickly and they went into lunch at 84 for no loss.

Left-arm spinner Venkatapathy Raju came in as first replacement, but could not achieve a breakthrough. However, veteran spinner Kanwaljeet Singh, who came in place of Raju, obliged the skipper in his fifth over.

Arun had crossed a personal milestone when he was on 31. He became the 11th Karnataka player to score over 3,000 runs in Ranji cricket. He achieved the feat in 45 matches. Only Rahul Dravid and Vijay R Bharadwaj have a better record of scoring 3,000 runs in 37 and 39 matches respectively.
