Cape Town: New Zealand are hopeful that injured all-rounder Chris Cairns will be fit to play in the first One-day International against South Africa on Friday.Cairns' long-standing knee injury hampered him on New Zealand's tour to Zimbabwe in September as well as during his match-winning 102 not out in the final of the ICC (International Cricket Council) Knock Out tournament against India in Nairobi on Sunday. However, New Zealand team management said a scan of Cairns' knee had revealed no new damage.
''The scan showed positive things, mainly that there was no major tearing within the tendon,'' team physiotherapist Mark Harrison told reporters.''It's just a flare-up of the old injury and now it's a matter of managing him game by game.'' Cairns has suffered from inflammation of the kneecap tendons for the past two years. (c) Reuters Limited.
