Abu Dhabi: Indian ambassador to the UAE K C Singh hosted a Diwali party for the visiting Indian cricket team at his residence here on Tuesday night.Members of the Indian team, led by skipper Saurav Ganguly, were in full strength at the reception, which was attended by UAE minister for higher education and scientific research Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak al Nahyan, who is also the chief patron of the Abu Dhabi Cricket Council, and other cricket officials from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. Prominent members of the Indian community were also present.
Mr Singh said the reception was hosted to honour the Indian team and to let the players celebrate Diwali in an Indian environment in a home away from their families. The occasion also afforded an opportunity to the Indian community in Abu Dhabi to meet and interact with their cricketing heroes.A festive mood prevailed at the ambassador's residence as sparklers and anars were lit and Indian sweets distributed. Enthusiastic cricket fans and players mingled freely to celebrate the festival of lights.The Indians are currently playing the Coca Cola Cup cricket tournament at Sharjah, which also features Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.
India lost their opening match to Sri Lanka, but won the tie against Zimbabwe in the first phase league of the tournament.India take on Zimbabwe in the second phase league on Thursay (Diwali day) and then clash with Sri Lanka on Friday. The final is to be played on Sunday. UNI
