STF seeks warrants against bookies

Lucknow: The Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh police has sought arrest warrants against the prime bookies-one each from Mumbai and New Delhi-following arrests of 19 people involved in betting during sunday's final between India and Sri Lanka in the Coca cola Cup cricket tournament at Sharjah.Senior Superintendent of Police of STF Arun Kumar said here today that in the court had been moved for procuring the arrest warrants against main accused Pawan Goel (New Delhi) and Dhamani (Mumbai). The warrants are expected to be issued later in the day.The STF had also informed the concerned organisations probing into the match-fixing scandals and on the bookies involved in the trade.The arrests in the betting syndicate rose to 19 following nabbing of six more culprits involved in the racket from the state capital yesterday. All of them have been booked under the UP gangster Act and were lodged in the jail under judical custody.Mr Kumar said the STF recovered a car, three mobile phones and Rs 26000 in cash from the arrested persons.The STF sleuths had busted the betting syndicate on sunday last by arresting 13 people, six each from Lucknow and Agra and one from Kanpur during the match. Over Rs 225,000, several mobile phones and other documents were seized from them.UNI
