BCCI makes first move, suspends players

Hyderabad: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has temporarily suspended five cricketers, named in the CBI report on match-fixing, from domestic cricket.The five cricketers named in the 162-page report of CBI are former captain Mohammad Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja, Nayan Mongia, Ajay Sharmaand Manoj Prabhakar. Of them, Prabhakar has already taken retirementfrom first class cricket. BCCI secretary J Y Lele told UNI on phone from Baroda that the Board had suspended the five players from domestic cricket for 15 days pending a final decision on the punishment.He said BCCI has appointed a one-man inquiry commission under former CBI Joint Director K Madhavan and a final decision would be taken after he submits the report within 15 days. The BCCI had released a Code of Conduct in the wake of the match-fixing allegations in Indian cricket and punishment for guilty cricketers could extend to a life ban from all forms of cricket.The report, made public by Sports Minister S S Dhindsa on November 1, has named the five cricketers and former team physiotherapist Dr Ali Irani besides a number of bookies and some foreign cricketers for match-fixing.
