Johannesburg: The axe finally fell on former South African captain Hansie Cronje, who on Thursday was officially banned by the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) for life. The UCBSA, however, gave Cronje a life line by stating that they might consider reversing the ruling if he repented for his disgraceful conduct. The general council of the UCBSA had resolved to ban Cronje from all cricket activities including commentating and coaching. This had triggered a fresh controversy with Cronje's lawyer threatening to sue the Board if they did not rescind their punishment.UCBSA president Percy Sonn in a statement said that pursuant to the resolution of October 4, W J Cronje had banned from the life membership of the Board and their activities. The statement also gave hope to Cronje stating that the Board may take consideration of the fact that people can rehabilitate over a period of time.
