Hyderabad: Mohammad Azharuddin, India's longest serving and most successful captain, has been dropped by the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) from the team for the Ranji trophy domestic cricket tournament. This follows the ban imposed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Azharuddin and four other cricketers who have been named by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its report on match-fixing. The ban was announced by BCCI president Dr A C Muthiah Friday, pending its own inquiry into the match-fixing scandal. The CBI report had been released on Wednesday by Sports Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa. "We have decided not to select him till the BCCI gives further directions," Shivlal Yadav, former Test cricketer and HCA secretary told IANS. Azharuddin had been selected for the Hyderabad Ranji trophy squad but he did not join the team, which is currently playing a league match against Karnataka at Bangalore.Hyderabad coach and former international Arshad Ayub had stated in Bangalore that Azharuddin had been suffering from a back injury and that he had been advised 15 days rest. However, with the present ban, Azhar will be out of the team for Hyderabad's next match. The BCCI ban on Azharuddin has added to the disappointment of cricket lovers and former cricketers here. "If the ban is within the framework of the Board's Code of Conduct, there is nothing anybody can do. The entire episode is shocking," former HCA secretary and manager of the Indian team that won the 1983 World Cup in England P R Man Singh said. Meanwhile, Azharuddin remained incommunicado for the third consecutive day on Friday. He did not venture out of his posh Banjara Hills residence and all efforts to contact him on phone proved futile.
