Colombo: Sri Lanka's cricketing authorities have appointed a prominent lawyer to investigate charges of bribe-taking levelled against two top cricketers in an Indian report on match-fixing, officials said Monday. The Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) have chosen President's counsel and human rights activist Desmond Fernando to probe the accusations and report in 30 days, BCCSL president Thilanga Sumathipala said. "He can investigate all the matches held in the past 10 years and he can visit any country he wants to, including India," Mr Sumathipala said, describing the carte blanche given to Fernando. Mr Sumathipala wrote to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) last week asking for a copy of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) report and authenticated transcripts of evidence pertaining to the two Sri Lankan cricketers. The report sent shock waves throughout the cricket-crazy island last week when it named former skipper Arjuna Ranatunga and his deputy Aravinda de Silva among several international players who had been bribed to throw matches. Both Ranatunga and de Silva denied the accusations. Ranatunga said he had never been approached by any bookmaker while De Silva claimed that he had reported the advances made by unidentified bribers to the authorities. Fernando's brief is to advise the BCCSL on "whether there is prima facie evidence of violation of the rules of the Board by any persons who were or are bound by the rules in relation to the international matches conducted or organised or approved by the BCCSL." Mr Sumathipala said Fernando, who is the BCCSL's nominee on the International Cricket Council's code of conduct committee, will be able to call on the help of any person or organisation to help in his investigations. Ranatunga and De Silva were supposed to have been bribed by New Delhi bookmaker and jeweler Mukesh Gupta to throw a match in 1994, two years before the pair led their team to a stunning World Cup victory against Australia.
