Tamil Nadu take big first innings lead

Chennai: Tamil Nadu were in a strong position forcing a big first innings lead of 223 runs by restricting Karnataka to 254 in the South Zone Ranji Trophy league match at the IIT ground on Friday.At stumps on the penultimate day of the four day match, Tamil Nadu, who had posted a big score of 477 batting first, had their openers Rajat Bhatia (34, two fours) and first innings centurion S Badrinath (40, three fours) prodding on to 77 without being separated in 167 minutes of batting left. Tamil Nadu have an overall lead of 300, with just the final day's play remaining on Saturday. Earlier, resuming at the overnight score of 103 for two, the Karnataka batsmen put a pathetic show with Sujith Somasunder falling cheaply for 12 in 97 minutes and captain Vijay Bharadwaj dismissed for a duck by medium pacer S Mahesh. Only Sujith's overnight partner Barrington Rowland top scored with 54(192 balls one four and a five) before falling as the fifth batsman to Tamil Nadu medium pacer T Kumaran. Leg-spinner W D Balaji Rao and Kumaran returned three-wicket hauls.UNI
