Dhaka: The latest Test-playing nation has had several foreign coaches including Mohinder Amarnath and Eddie Barlow, but the man responsible for Bangaldesh's big leap on to the world stage has been former West Indian opener Gordon Greenidge.Greenidge quit as coach soon after Bangaldesh's World Cup debut, apparently due to differences with the nation's cricket board. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) did not take it too kindly when Greenidge said the national team would not be ready for Test cricket for another decade, and refused to renew his contract. However, on the occasion of the nation's Test debut, the BCB invited all former coaches to be present. Greenidge came with his wife. Visibly happy with the performance of the team he once coached, the former opener however, did not comment on whether he regretted making that statement. ''I am very happy for Bangaldesh and its players, who have done wonderfully well,'' he said. Greenidge met Aminul Islam in his hotel room to congratulate him on scoring his maiden Test century. ''Well played, but why did you get out? You should have kept your patience. After all it is not every day that you get a chance to make a big score,'' Greenidge said, giving Aminul a hug.Greenidge had not only masterminded Bangadesh's victory in the ICC trophy in 1997-98, but united the players into a cohesive unit. The government also honoured Greenidge for his contribution to Bangladeshi cricket after they earned the right to play in the World Cup.However, Greenidge earned the wrath of the Board when he criticised it in the local media for dragging its feet on certain issues.
