Dhaka: Former West Indian opening batsman Cuthbert Gordon Greenidge is likely to be reinstated as the coach of the Bangladesh cricket team, official sources here said. Greenidge, whose contract as coach was axed midway through the 1999 World Cup in England, has agreed to take up the job at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Proththan (Bangladesh Sport Education Institute), said Obaidul Quader, the State Minister for Youth and Sport, on Sunday. Quader said Greenidge had agreed to the proposal after meeting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed on Saturday. Greenidge, who is in Dhaka at the invitation of the Bangladesh Cricket Board to witness the Bangladesh cricket team's Test debut, had called on Hasina at the Bangabandhu National Stadium before she left for the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) summit that is being held in Qatar. "The prime minister offered the former coach the job," Quader said, adding that Greenidge, who inspired Bangladesh to their maiden International Cricket Council (ICC) Trophy triumph in 1997, had no hesitation accepting the assignment. Greenidge, who is fondly called "Flash Gordon" by the cricket world, could not be reached for his comments. In a cricket career spanning nearly two decades, Greenidge played 108 Test matches, scoring 7,558 runs at an average of 44.72 per innings and 128 One-day internationals in which he scored 5,134 runs at an average of 45.03 per innings.
