Board President XI piles up 317 for five

Faridabad: Board President XI recovered from initial hiccups with sparkling batting from captain Hrishkesh Kanitkar (118 batting) to pile up 314 for five against Zimbabwe on the first day of three-day tie at Nahar Singh Stadium here on Monday.Kanitkar, coming two down, remained not out at 118 with 14 fours and one six. Other useful contributions came from Dahiya (50) and Virinder Sewag (60).In the morning, Kanitkar won the toss and elected to bat in a overcast sky with moisture on the pitch. Ravnet Ricky and Vijay Dahiya opened the innings for the team.For Zimbabwe Guy Whittall stepped in to lead the team as Heath Streak opted out because of throat infection and mild fever.Zimbabwean medium fast bowler Henry Olonga and Travis Friend exploited the conditions and did not let the batsmen to score easily in the first hour. The most successful bowler for the visitors was Paul Strang who captured three wickets in 20 overs conceding 59 runs.Travis Friend and spinner Brian Murphy captured one wicket each. Ravnet was first to be out for five in 12th over while going for a shot he sneaked a catch to Trevor Madondo of Travis Friend.Friend opening the bowling with Olonga, changed the end and bowled from the pavillion end forcing Ravnet to go for the shot.In the first hour Board President XI scored 30 runs losing one wicket. One down batsman Hemang Badani, along with Vijay Dahiya added 58 runs for the second wicket. Dahiya scored a 50 before being being clean bowled by Paul Strang. Kanitkar and Virendra Sewag (60) scored at liberty and added 108 runs for fourth wicket. Sewag was out while hitting a ball of Strang. He was taken at long off by Olonga. Kanitkar scored a century by sending a ball of spinner Grant Flower over the ropes in the 80th over when the team score was 284 for five. Immediately after that Whittall introduced a new bowler.Throughout the day, Whittall tried six bowlers but most impressive of them as Strang. Spinner Brian Murphy and Grant Flower were the most expensive bowlers who conceded 75 and 46 runs in 16 and 13 overs respectively. Kanitkar and Abhijit Kale are batting at 118 and 15 respectively at the end of the day. UNI
