Bloemfontein: Controversy surrounded Jacques Kallis' century on the opening day of the first Test between South Africa and New Zealand on Friday.Kallis finished the day undefeated on 153, out of a total of 270 for three. But he was fortunate to reach three figures. On 76 and with South Africa on 131 for two, he appeared to be run out when Daryll Cullinan's return drive was glanced onto the non-striker's stumps by bowler Shayne O'Connor. Umpire Dave Orchard referred the decision to third umpire Rudi Koertzen, but the two available television replays proved inconclusive. No pictures were available from the cameras positioned square of the crease.
''I've been told by the production staff that the tape...from the line cameras froze in the machine,'' United Cricket Board communications manager Bronwyn Wilkinson told reporters.(c) Reuters Limited.
