The King Commission of inquiry into cricket match-fixing in South Africa will eventually cost the country's Cricket Board about 1.2 million rands in legal fees. United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) managing director Ali Bacher said here that the Board had already paid almost 600,000 rands for players in the South African national team to have legal representation at the commission. The South African government after Delhi Police revealed telephonic discussions between now banned captain Hansie Cronje and Indian bookmaker Sanjeev Chawla established the commission. Bacher said the UCBSA would not pay the legal costs of Cronje, or those of Herschelle Gibbs and Henry Williams, who were both found guilty at disciplinary hearings after they were implicated in attempts to throw a game in Nagpur in India earlier this year. They have been banned from international cricket until January 2001 and have paid fines of 60,000 rands and 10,000 rands respectively. A third player implicated in match-fixing, Pieter Strydom, was found not guilty and the UCBSA will pay his legal costs. Bacher said the UCBSA had decided to pay the legal costs of players because the body had asked for a public investigation. "We could have held the hearings behind closed doors, in which case the players would have incurred no legal expenses," he said. Bacher said the legal costs of players who were implicated in match-fixing during the 1996 Mohinder Amarnath benefit match in Mumbai was still being considered. He said the UCBSA would await the report of the King Commission, whose terms of reference have been extended to investigate those allegations as well. The King Commission will resume its hearings on January 25. India Abroad News Service
