Brisbane: Australian selector and former captain Allan Border said on Tuesday batsman Mark Waugh had been crucified in the media over cricket's match-fixing scandal and should be left to play in peace.Border said his former teammate had denied allegations he had taken money from an Indian bookmaker in exchange for information and that Waugh's word should be accepted.''The presumption of innocence has got to take precedence there,'' Border told Australian Broadcasting Corp radio.''He's under a lot more pressure and it seems, in the media, he has been crucified,'' said Border, who retired in 1994 after captaining Australia in a record 93 Tests.Indian bookmaker Mukesh Gupta has said he paid $ 20,000 to Waugh in exchange for information about the team and its tactics at a six-a-side tournament in Hong Kong in 1993.Waugh has denied the allegation and has promised to clear his name. The elegant batsman was fined in 1995 after admitting he accepted $ 5,000 from another Indian bookmaker for information about pitch and weather conditions in a different series in Sri Lanka.''He's saying one thing and an illegal bookmaker is saying another and we seem to be taking the illegal bookmaker's word on it,'' Border said.''I'd sooner believe Mark Waugh's side of this and just get on with it,'' he said. The Australian Cricket Board (ACB) announced on November 2 it had asked the International Cricket Council's anti-corruption unit to investigate the claims. The ACB has allowed Waugh to continue playing while the inquiry is held and Waugh will line up with his teammates in the first Test against West Indies starting in Brisbane on Thursday.Border joins Waugh's twin brother and current captain, Steve Waugh, in rallying behind the Australian batsman.
