Sharjah: An unbroken fifth wicket partnership of 119 between Nasir Siddiqui and Kashif Khan steered the United Arab Emirates to victory over Malaysia in the semi-final of the Asian Cricket Council Trophy here on Wednesday.Chasing 202 to win in 50 overs, the hosts were in a spot of bother with four top order batsmen back in the pavilion with the score on 85. But Siddiqui and Khan kept their nerve to guide UAE to a six-wicket victory and a berth in next year's Asia Cup One-day tournament. The UAE will meet Hong Kong in the final, Friday. Both teams have qualified to play in next April's Asia Cup where they will come up against Test-playing nations India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.Malaysia can consider themselves unfortunate not to have got the wicket of Siddiqui who was caught short of his crease and was clearly run out when UAE were struggling at 68 for three. But Indian umpire S K Bansal decided that Siddiqui had made his ground though slow motion replays showed the batsman was well out of his crease when a direct hit from short mid-off broke the wicket at the keeper's end.Siddiqui, who was on 28 at this stage, continued to play the anchor role and finished unbeaten on 53 while Khan remained not out on 69. Siddiqui was named Man-of-the-Match having also taken two for 35 in the Malaysian innings."It was a brilliant performance from the guys. At 85 for four we needed a parternership and I was confident that these two would come good," UAE captain Saeed Al Saffar said.Malaysian captain Suresh Navaratnam blamed his batsmen for not posting enough runs on the board. "I felt we were short by around 30 runs. We had only a fighting chance with 202. We needed at least 230, which would have been a winning score," Navaratnam said.
