Calcutta: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials on Wednesday deferred passing punishment on former skipper Mohammad Azharuddin and other players tainted by match-fixing allegations until next week.BCCI president Dr A C Muthiah indicated there was some disagreement among board members, but added that "extreme steps" would be taken against those players found guilty."The members were unanimous that the guilty players would certainly receive punishment," Dr Muthiah told reporters after a Special General Body Meeting of the 40-strong BCCI."There were, however, different sentiments. However that may be, the Board is going take extreme steps against those accused of match-fixing and betting," he added. The meeting came a day after Azharuddin, Manoj Prabhakar, Ajay Jadeja, Nayan Mongia and Ajay Sharma were all given a final hearing by the BCCI Disciplinary Committee in New Delhi. An independent BCCI probe had confirmed allegations contained in an earlier report by federal investigators that Azharuddin was directly involved in fixing matches. It also accused Prabhakar, Jadeja and Sharma of consorting with bookies, while Mongia was seemingly exonerated. The BCCI has made it clear that it is considering a life ban, especially in the case of Azharuddin."We will have to take into the consideration the contribution the five players made to the country before the final decision, which will be spelt out by Monday or Tuesday," Dr Muthiah said. The BCCI president also said he would be seeking "legal advice to safeguard the Board's interests" before making a final decision.Copyright @2000 AFP.
