Margao: An outstanding performance, marked by inspired bowling coupled with an equally fine batting display by captain J Arun Kumar and his 96 runs partnership for the first wicket with Mithun Beerala, guided Karnataka to a comfortable nine-wicket victory over host Goa on the last day of the four day South Zone Ranji Trophy cricket tournament, which concluded at the Rajendra Prasad Stadium here on Saturday.Arun Kumar stroked his way to a breezy half-century (55) studded with ten hits to the fence while his opening partner Mithun Beerala remained unbeaten on 38, inclusive of five fours. This outstanding effort by Karnataka saw them qualify for the super league stage along with Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad. The visitors, who needed an outright win to qualify resumed at the over night score of 25 for no loss and had no difficulty in reaching the target, losing only one wicket in the process. Karnataka, who gained a well-deserved eight-point victory took their tally to 24 points. Goa had to be content with only three points from one drawn match with as many matches. A jubilant Karnataka coach Sayed Kirmani said he was happy with the performance of his team in the absence of their top stars J Srinath, Vekatesh Prasad, Anil Kumble, Sunil Joshi and Rahul Dravid. He specially praised medium pacers Dodda Ganesh and Manzoor Ali Khan. He said both bowledbrilliantly. D Ganesh returned with match figures of 10 for 139 and Manzoor Ali Khan 7 for 89. He also praised the batsmen for their performance. When asked about the wicket, he said wicket was perfect and we are hoping for the a better performance in the super league matches. UNI
