Dhaka: Bangladesh cricket's chief selector Tanveer Haider has resigned on health grounds, a month after a controversy over his choice of players for the nation's maiden Test match against India, officials said on Sunday. The resignation, sent on November 15, was accepted at a meeting of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in Dhaka late Saturday, a sports official said on condition of anonymity. No successor was named for Haider, who was also unavailable for comment."He stepped down citing poor health and we regretfully accepted his resignation," BCB general secretary Syed Ashraful Huq was quoted by 'The Daily Star' as saying.Huq said the former national player's role in the selection process was over. Haider's exit was expected after the controversy over the selection of the Bangladesh team against India for the historic November 10 to 14 Test debut in Dhaka. He was forced to raise his original list of 14 players to 16 following an uproar over the surprise omission of right-hand batsman Habibul Bashar and spinner Enamul Haque. The players were later included at the intervention of BCB president Saber Hossain Chowdhury. Haider, who is recovering from a by-pass surgery, will however, retain his position as chairman of the Dhaka metropolitan cricket committee, press reports said. Copyright @2000 AFP.
