Colombo: Sri Lankan cricketers have formed an association to safeguard their interests amid a probe into charges of match-fixing against two senior players, officials here said Monday.Sri Lankan skipper Sanath Jayasuriya was elected president of the association at the weekend, officials said, adding the union was set up along the lines of the Australian Cricketers' Association.Jayasuriya and his team left for South Africa on tour Saturday shortly after establishing the body. "The association is formed to look into the interests and welfare of the present players," an official said.Former skipper Arjuna Ranatunga who retired from international cricket in August is a committee member of the new association. The latest move came as an investigation was underway into allegations that Ranatunga and his deputy Aravinda de Silva received bribes from an Indian bookmaker to throw matches. The one-man investigator said Sri Lanka was seeking help from Indian bookmaker M K Gupta to probe charges that Ranatunga and de Silva were bribed."We have asked the Indian High Commission here to help with arranging an interview with Mr Gupta sometime early this month," Fernando said, adding he was unable to meet Gupta during a visit to India last month."I must first interview Mr Gupta. What he has to say will be crucial to the case," Fernando said, adding the CBI had made available to him a translation of Gupta's testimony in Hindi.Fernando, a lawyer by profession and Sri Lanka's representative in the International Cricket Council's Code of Conduct Committee, also travelled to London for talks with ICC officials. He said ICC anti-corruption unit head Paul Condon would arrive in India on December 10 in connection with the CBI probe and the allegations that implicated a large number of high profile players.Copyright @2000 AFP.
