Pune: Former India captains Ajit Wadekar and Polly Umrigar on Tuesday criticised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for appointing a foreign coach to Indian team.Speaking at a press conference to launch of the third edition of under-14 Saamna Trophy cricket tournament, both Umrigar and Wadekar opined that the BCCI should have more faith and confidence in Indian coaches. There was no dearth of former players, who could don the mantle of coach with equal ingenuity and expertise compared to a foreign coach, they stressed. The former captains said that knowing full well that the Indian team comprises of players from different zones and regions, who speak different languages it would be difficult for a foreign coach to put his ideas across. On the other hand the Indian coach could come down to the level of players and understand their problems and difficulties and sort them out in comparison. The players, who reach the international level and are picked to represent the country need not require coaching as such but certainly require guidance from time to time to boost their confidence and mental toughness, they said. Both Umrigar and Wadekar also opined that more and more former players should be given a chance to handle the administration. They arguedthat the players having gone through the grind know the requirements of a player. When their attention was drawn to the selection of team on quota basis, Wadekar agreed that there were some acts of omission and commission but on the whole it was in all fairness. Umrigar also opened his mind on the selection aspect and pointed out that the present system of five-member selection committee holds good in view of our vast country. The three-member panel mooted in some quarterswould not be able to do justice the former captain observed. UNI
