Chennai: Reigning Champions Tamil Nadu suffered a stunning 33-run defeat at the hands of Karnataka in the South Zone One-day cricket tournament for the K S Subbiah Pillai Trophy on Tuesday. On a truncated day in which the contest was reduced to 32-overs as the play was possible only after lunch due to wet ground conditions, Karnataka put into bat on a bowler-friendly wicket, scored 171 for nine, after recovering from two early dismissals in the very first over. After losing J Arun Kumar (0) and Thilak Naidu (0) to medium pacer T Kumaran in the first four balls of the innings, Karnataka recovered well through a 101-run stand for the third wicket in 18.2 overs between Mithun Beerala (53 runs, 4x4, 1x6) and Vijay Bharadwaj (47 runs, 3x4, 1x6).Once they were separated, Karnataka lost wickets at regular intervals. But the innings was sustained in the end through some lusty hitting by B Akhil and Dodda Ganesh. In reply, Tamil nadu too started on a disastrous note losing S Mahesh, who was promoted in the batting order, of the ninth ball. S Ramesh and Rajat Bhatia added 48 for the second wicket in 12.2 overs. But, the middle order caved in under pressure as the hosts lost five wickets in the space of 26runs collapsing from 51 for one in 13.5 overs to 77 for six in 21.2 overs. Left-arm spinner Santosh Vadeyaraj (3 for 16) and off-spinner Anand Yalvigi (2 for 24) shared the spoils for Karnataka. UNI
