New Delhi: They can run but they can't hide, say top Indian Income Tax (IT) officials who are closer than ever to tightening the noose around past and present cricketers with "undisclosed incomes". The IT department's investigations into such undisclosed incomes of cricketers is complete and reports will be sent in a few days' time to officers concerned in areas where the cricketers reside, director (investigations) S C Parija told India Abroad News Service. "We have already dispatched the appraisal report of Mohammed Azharuddin and his wife Sangeeta Bijlani to the assessing officer of Hyderabad (where the cricketer lives). The appraisal report on Navjot Singh Sidhu will be submitted in Patiala (Punjab) in 10 days time," he revealed. "We are now giving final touches to the reports on Delhi-based cricketers," he said. The Delhi-based cricketers are former national coach Kapil Dev, and cricketers Ajay Jadeja, Manoj Prabhakar, Ajay Sharma and Nikhil Chopra. "We will be submitting their reports to the assessing officer in seven-eight days." The IT department raided more than 90 premises of past and present cricketers, cricket authorities and suspected bookies on July 20 and 21. The raid was in connection with the match-fixing scandal and was simultaneously carried out in New Delhi, Chandigarh, Calcutta, Bangalore, Ahemdabad and Hyderabad. According to IT department sources, investigations showed that Kapil Dev has an undisclosed income of more than Rs 20 million. "Kapil Dev has undisclosed income of more than Rs 20 million. Even Ajay Jadeja and Manoj Prabhakar had undisclosed assets of around Rs 20 million. Investigations have shown that Ajay Sharma and Nikhil Chopra had undisclosed incomes below Rs 10 million," said an officer who is investigating the case, adding that the two are "small fries". The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) imposed life bans on Azharuddin and Sharma on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in match-fixing. It also debarred Ajay Jadeja and Prabhakar from playing any official matches for five years while exonerating Nayan Mongia. "This is a cricketer's only chance. After an assessing officer studies the report, he would send a notice to a cricketer regarding his undisclosed income. A cricketer would be given at least 30 days time for stating his 10-year block return from 1991 to 2001," Mr Parija said. "After he submits an account, he will have to pay 60 per cent of the tax on the undisclosed income. There is no escaping for a cricketer. If he hides his income or gives a wrong one, investigations will show," Parija said. "They will be further penalised and action can be initiated against them. They could be prosecuted and sent to jail which could be anything from six months to seven years of rigorous imprisonment," he said. He said even though the procedure usually takes at least two years to complete, in this case it might be early. Another officer said they have evidence that some cricketers have not filed their income tax returns at all. "Ajay Sharma is one such cricketer who will face a tough time. He has not paid his income tax returns. He will now have to pay though his nose. We have evidence that some cricketers also did not show their earnings and salaries made by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)," the officer said. Mr Parija said the nature of undisclosed income; undisclosed assets and unexplained expenditure have been mentioned in the appraisal report. "Our priorities were to first finish the investigations on cricketers' incomes. We will now take up the suspected bookies and officials," he said.India Abroad News Service
