Kumble selected for Birla Award

New Delhi: Test cricketer Anil Kumble and chess champion Aarthie Ramaswamy have been selected for the K K Birla foundation awards for sports for 1999-2000.The K K Birla foundation awards for sports were set up in 1991 and are given to two sportspersons. These awards carry Rs One lakh each.Kapil Dev and squash champion Bhubaneshwari Kumari were the firstrecipient of the awards. Other recipients of these awards so far are Geet Sethi, Vishwanathan Anand (1992), Ramesh Krishnan, Bahadur Prasad (1993), Jaspal Rana, K. Malleswari(1994) Sachin Tendulkar, Ms Malathi Holla and special award for Shiny Wilson (1995-96) P Gopi Chand, Kunjarani Devi and special award for Santosh Yadav (1996-97), Leander Paes/Mahesh Bhupathi, Aparna Popat(1997-98) Dhanraj Pillay, Jyotirmoyee Sikdar (1998-99).The award citation for Anil Kumble and Aarthie Ramaswamy says that these players have brought laurels to sports with their superb play and devotion.About Anil Kumble, it says the Karnataka bowler has an impressive overall record since his debut in the International cricket against England in 1990. His place in the Indian team has become so pivotal that the team is very much dependent on his performance. He has been consistently brilliant over the past decade. Last year in February he became the second bowler in cricket history to take all 10 wickets in an inning against Pakistan in the second Test.Also last year he became the third Indian to claim 250 wickets in Tests trapping New Zealand's Matt Horne leg before in Kanpur. He became the highest wicket taker for India in limited overs cricket getting past former India captain Kapil Dev's mark of 253 wickets when his tally moved to 254 wickets in January, this year in the Tri-Series match against Pakistan at Perth. While Kapil Dev played 225 matches, Kumble crossed the mark in 191 matches. This also made him the third highest wicket taker behind the Pakistani duo of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. UNI
