Johannesburg: The touring Sri Lankan team that arrived here on Sunday will need at least a week to get used to the unique South African pitches, according to captain Sanath Jayasuriya. Sri Lankans play their first warm-up match on Thursday against an NFO XI combination in Randjesfontein, north of Johannesburg. "The wet weather in Sri Lanka prevented us from preparing pitches which could simulate the South African ones with their unique pace and bounce," Jayasuriya said, adding that because of this, they could not get as much practice as they would have liked to. He said it was therefore critical to use every warm-up match in the run up to the first two One-day Internationals against South Africa in Port Elizabeth and East London next week. Meanwhile, the United Cricket Board of South Africa president Percy Sonn challenged the South African squad to settle scores after their defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka in the Singer Cup final earlier this year in Colombo. But Sri Lanka will also want to avenge their 0-2 defeat by South Africa in a Test series in 1998. India Abroad News Service
