Christchurch: England scored an emphatic eight-wicket victory over lowly Ireland in a league match of the Women's World Cup 2000 at the BIL Oval on Thursday.Ireland captain Miriam Grealey won the toss and elected to bat, but her team never got going. The Ireland batsmen failed to build any big partnership and were bowled out for 103 in 44.2 overs. Isobel Joyce top scored for Ireland on 26 runs from 38 balls with five fours, while Catherine O'Neill made 25 (62 balls, three fours).England were never in difficulty in their run chase though they lost the wicket of opener Kathryn Leng with the score reading 28. The other opener Arran Thompson, who remained unbeaten on 44 runs (89 balls, five fours) added 63 runs for the second wicket with Barbara Daniels (31 runs, 35 balls, five fours) to set up the England victory.England have lost to South Africa as well as India and may find it difficult to qualify for the next stage. They will have to upset either defending champions Australia or strong contenders New Zealand to keep their hopes alive.
