Mumbai: The outgoing Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president Manohar Joshi last night appealed to all groups in election fray to unanimously pick former captain Ajit Wadekar as the next MCA president.Joshi, veteran Shiv Sena leader and current union heavy industries minister is openly supporting Wadekar for the first time, urging the warring factions to elect a former cricketer than a politician "since it was the turn of an cricketer to lead the august body".Joshi himself defeated former wicket-keeper Madhav Mantri eight years ago which provoked Sunil Gavaskar to critisise the voters, but in a farewell dinner hosted by him he said when he was elected everybody said MCA was ushering politics but now there was a move to bring another politician. He was referring to former cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar's comments in media that if a politician can deliver then there was no problem in having him (Pawar) as president of MCA.Joshi said Sharad Pawar, who was touted as a possible rival to Wadekar, has himself as Garware club's president abstained from the meetings called by MCA to solve problems. He has failed to attend even annual general body meetings, he added. He was of the opinion that the three groups led by secretaries Pravin Barve (candidate Wadekar) and Professor Ratnakar Shetty (candidate Bal Mahadalkar) and others (candidate Pawar) should elect Wadekar unanimously and then fight for other posts. The elections are scheduled to take place on January 19.
