Wellington: New Zealand cricket coach David Trist has rejected pleas to stay on beyond the end of his current contract which expires in July next year, NZ Cricket said on Friday.Operations Manager John Reid confirmed reports that Trist submitted a letter of resignation following New Zealand's 2-0 Test series victory over Zimbabwe in September. Efforts since then to change the coach's mind had failed, Reid said in a statement.''Ideally we would like David to continue through to the next World Cup (in 2003) but we entirely respect his decision not to seek a renewal of his contract,'' Reid said.Trist will lead the New Zealand team through the upcoming series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. His last series in charge would probably be a tour of Sri Lanka tentatively set for mid-2001, NZ Cricket said. Trist's contract ends in July.''David Trist is a players' coach. He has quietly set about reinforcing team protocols and providing the positive leadership that has seen the New Zealand team continue to develop as a competitive unit,'' Reid said.(c) Reuters Limited.
