Dhaka: Bangladesh, boosted by becoming a member of cricket's exclusive Test club, are set to launch a nationwide hunt for new talent to build a nation of strong cricketers, officials said on Saturday."The talent hunt programme will start on Sunday to build Bangladesh as a strong cricket nation, which will be directly supervised by four Sri Lankan coaches," Mahmud Ul Haq Manu, secretary of the development committee of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), told AFP.The coaches, who have already arrived in Dhaka, are Carlton Valetine Bernardus, Reginald Perera, Senarath Alwis and S D Warnakulasuriya. Bangladesh were promoted to cricket's exclusive Test club in June, gripping the nation with cricket euphoria. The turning point was Bangladesh's victory in the 1997 International Cricket Council Trophy in Malayasia, cricket commentators said. The BCB organised a 10-day preliminary camp in nine centres in six districts nationwide, where they will select up to 80 boys for each of the Under 17, 15 and 13 teams. The numbers will be whittled down to 30 for each age group in another camp in the first week of January, after which the BCB will organise tournaments before making a final selection of 30 from each group who will be trained by the Sri Lankan coaches.Officials also said an under-19 tournament would be held this month and a squad of 20 cricketers would be picked for a long residential training.Copyright AFP 2000
