Johannesburg: Disgraced former South African cricket captain Hansie Cronje, who has been banned for life by the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA), has the right to go ahead with his life, to coach cricket and to work as a commentator on the game, his lawyer has been quoted as saying. The Afrikaans daily 'Beeld' quoted Cronje's lawyer, Leslie Sackstein, as giving this reason for the legal proceedings started by Cronje's team at the Pretoria High Court after the UCBSA failed to respond to an ultimatum in October to rescind its decision to ban Cronje after he acknowledged earlier this year that he had fixed matches and had links with bookmakers. An interdict of more than 100 pages has been filed with the court and action is expected to start in January 2001. "This is an application for the review and rescinding of the resolution which bars him (Cronje) from all activities of the UCBSA throughout his life," Sackstein said. "We are also applying for an interdict which will prohibit the UCBSA from taking any further steps against Hansie," he added. Sackstein said Cronje had already had four offers from schools and other organisations to work as a coach but has had to turn them down because of the ban. He said Cronje had already made it quite clear that he had retired from cricket and does not want to play again. "But at this stage we don't even know if he can go and watch Tests, as the resolution is unclear about whether it bans him from entering stadiums," he said. UCBSA spokesperson Bronwyn Wilkinson said she could not comment on this, as the matter was before the court. She said the UCBSA Council had instructed its legal team to oppose the court application.
