Hyderabad: Former Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin has decided to challenge the life ban imposed on him by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in court and is reportedly engaging the services of former law minister H R Bhardwaj to fight his case. Sources close to Azhar's family said that after seeking opinion from legal experts and consulting his family members and friends, Azhar has finally decided to wage a legal battle to "restore his lost glory in the world of cricket".The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had indicted Azhar for indulging in match-fixing and having links with book-makers and the BCCI handed him a life ban. Azhar, who claims to be innocent, might file a case in the Andhra Pradesh High Court, sources said. However, his well-wishers are advising him to approach the Mumbai or Delhi High Court. The disgraced cricketer, who had earlier engaged the services of Mahesh Jethmalani, son of former Union law minister Ram Jethmalani, has now appointed Bhardwaj as his legal advisor. Bhardwaj, a former law minister, was recently in Hyderabad to meet Azhar. India's most successful captain had earlier decided to appeal to the BCCI to reconsider its decision but he changed his mind. "After the kind of report submitted by BCCI's Special Commissioner K Madhavan, Azhar has no hope of getting justice from the Board," sources said. They added that the view expressed in certain quarters that the CBI had falsely implicated Azhar in the match-fixing case had strengthened his case. Azhar has not publicly reacted to the imposition of the ban. Family members said Azhar would speak to the press at an "appropriate time". Azhar and his actress wife Sangeeta Bijlani are not moving out of their home in the posh Banjara Hills neighborhood here. Pained at the allegations made against him, Azhar is observing Ramadan fast and is praying for an end to the "trauma," sources said. India Abroad News Service
