Lucknow: The Deodhar Trophy final proved to be an edge-of-the-seat thriller on Thursday with South Zone and Central Zone remaining tied at 298 and being declared joint winners. In a pulsating tie at the K D Singh Babu Stadium here, replying to Central Zone's 298 for 8 in 50 overs, South Zone were all out at the same score on the last ball of their innings. Chasing the mammoth total, South Zone were off to a good start with a sparkling 93 by V V S Laxman. A flutter in the middle order reduced them to 258 for 9 after 46 overs. Faced with certain defeat, the last pair of Balaji Rao and Venkatapathy Raju remained unruffled by the nerve-wracking situation, which demanded of them 41 runs off 24 balls. They displayed tremendous grit and mixed aggression with a fine running between the wickets to inch towards the target. In 18 balls, they scored 30 runs and in the last over, the side needed 11 runs to win the title. The scores were tied by the fifth ball of the last over. At this stage, Raju, who was on strike, could only manage to pat the ball back to bowler Mohammad Kaif and went for the all-important run, only to be run out. UNI
