Mumbai: The National Cricket Academy (NCA) suffered its first hiccup when former opening batsman and legend Sunil Manohar Gavaskar quit the NCA committee in protest against remarks made by former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Raj Singh Dungarpur.Dungarpur is the chairman of the NCA committee, which also includes Karnataka Cricket Association secretary Brijesh Patel with former India internationals Polly Umrigar and S Venkataraghavan as permanent invitees. It is understood that a serious difference of opinion erupted between Gavakar and Dungarpur over the match between NCA XI and the visiting Zimbabwe side. Gavaskar, it is reported, was against such a tour fixture stating that other teams too deserved a match against visiting sides.Gavaskar's observations obviously did not find favour with Dungarpur, who had indirectly criticised the former opener for his comments. According to BCCI sources, Gavaskar tendered his resignation during NCA board meeting at the Cricket Club of India on Friday. The NCA after the successful completion of two courses (four-month long-term and three-week short-term) this year was set to take off with the recruitment of former Australian opener Geoff Marsh as additional consultant. The NCA was launched with another former Australian (wicket-keeper) Rod Marsh as consultant.Rod Marsh had been visiting the NCA regularly and giving valuable inputs with physical trainer Bernard Savage. With the inclusion of Geoff Marsh in the panel, the NCA was expected to grow stronger as the foundation for producing world class cricketers with emphasis on physical fitness, which today takes precedence over sheer cricketing skills. However, the resignation of Gavaskar could cause repercussions unless the other BCCI mandarins are able to intervene and cause a rapproachment. Gavaskar, in fact, had also conducted a clinic on batting for the NCA probables in the first year.
