Pune: The issue of taking back the Arjuna awards from former captain Mohammed Azahruddin, Ajay Jadeja and Manoj Prabhakar is still open, said union sports minister Uma Bharati on Monday. Ms Bharati, who was here to inagurate the under-14 Limited Overs Saamna Trophy cricket tournament stoutly defended the government stand of withdrawing the most prestigious national award for sports only after the allegations against them were proved in the court of law.Explaining the government's stand, she pointed out that there are specific rules framed, by which the award could be withdrawn. But the government is not in any haste and would initiate the action only after the allegations were proved in the court of law, she added. The government has issued notices to the three alleged cricketers asking them to explain their stand in the match-fixing and betting scandal, which has brought the game into shame.''We have made our intentions very clear in this regard by asking them to give in writing their stand on the alleged involvement with the match-fixing and betting,'' she added. The government has even approached the ''law ministry'' to frame specific rules regarding match-fixing and betting so that in future the players involved could be "booked'', she observed.''I will personally go through them (the players' reply to the government's notice). Even go to the extent of taking the legal opinion if required,'' Ms Bharati said.Earlier, former Test cricketer turned politician Kirti Azad said the government should not take any hasty steps in withdrawing the awards from the alleged cricketers.UNI
