Rajkot: The Rajkot police, while investigating the case filed against Azhar, Jadeja and few others by Rajkot advocate Sanjay Vyas on December 12, have got a couple of major breakthroughs. According to Rajkot Police Commissioner Sudhir Sinha, the police searched the hotel telephone bills and found that Azhar alone had paid Rs 4,600.The Rajkot police approached Indian cricketers Venkatesh Prasad and Sunil Joshi on December 14 when India played Zimbabwe in the fifth and final One-dayer with regard to the 1996 One-day match against South Africa at this venue, Mr Sinha said in an exclusive chat with Thatscricket.com. Both these players had played in the 1996 One-day tie, which according to the CBI report was fixed. Mr Sinha, however, reiterated that the Rajkot police only had an informal chat with these two players. "They are both absolutely innocent and we haven't even recorded their statements," the police chief said.It is reliably learnt that the Rajkot police also wanted to talk to "little master" Sachin Tendulkar, who was the captain during the 1996 match. They, however, decided against it as they did not want to involve him in any discussion related to match-fixing prior to the match against Zimbabwe.Since the case was filed, the Rajkot police have investigated Hotel SilverPalace where the Indian team had stayed in 1996 and also checked the register of the hotel to investigate who else stayed at that hotel during that time. According to a police source, Ahzar's telephone bill totalled Rs 4,600 and if his mobile phone bill was included, it could well be over Rs 25,000. The police officials were astounded by the figures of the telephone bills.Mr Sudhir Sinha added that his officials had also found a few documents, which could come in handy in further investigations. "We would also look at the CBI report and would take a decision on how to proceed further in a couple of days," he said. Meanwhile, the police also discovered that a girl called "Dimple" is alleged to have stayed with Ajay Jadeja. Her name was found registered against room 105 during the same time and she reportedly belongs to Ahemdabad. The police have investigated her and her statements have been recorded. But, the police refused to divulge the details of her statements. The Rajkot police are looking forward to interrogating Hiren Hathi, who was raided by the Income Tax officials a few months ago. The police officials went to his residence in Ahemdabad, but did not find him there. The police want to talk to him as he was reported to be staying at the same hotel and is supposed to be very close to Ajay Jadeja and Kapil Dev.Sanjay Vyas, who filed the case for cheating the public against these cricketers, said that his stand has been vindicated. "The fact that the government was contemplating to ask the players to return the Arjuna Awards showed that they had cheated the country," he said. "I request the Police Commissioner of Rajkot to investigate the case under the Indian Penal Code as the players have acted as traitors of the country and I hope he will do that."
